The Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, or MCREST, works closely with the Salvation Army. Their mission is to work in cooperation with local churches to provide temporary emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families living in our community. The goal of the MCREST organization is "to give people a hand up not a hand out" and accepts only those people who are actively working to rebuild their lives.
WHY SHOULD WE HELP?
"Then the King will say to the people on the right, 'Come you that are blessed by my father! Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world. I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me; in prison and you visited me.' The righteous will then answer him, 'When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our
homes, or naked and clothe you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me!"
Matthew 25:34-41
WHAT CAN I DO?
The opportunity to serve comes in a variety of ways. The set-up crew transforms our church building into a working home for as many as 60 men, women and children for an entire week, several weeks a year. After the week is complete the crew makes the church building ready to celebrate Sunday. We need people to volunteer as drivers; people to work as kitchen assistants, preparing and serving three meals a day for the MCREST guests; intake helpers to welcome the MCREST guests each night; guardian angels to provide human Christian contact during the evening hours; and men and women who
will provide laundry service--the kinds of caring contact and services we all need.
LET US SIGN YOU UP!
The MCREST Planning Committee is available on Sundays at a table located in the Fellowship Hall to answer questions and assist everyone seeking to serve in this exciting community mission. You may also begin signing up for any or all of the many areas of service. We can use the talent and energy of every willing person, young and old, to make MCREST WEEKS a success. All necessary training will be provided to ensure that everyone will be comfortable and prepared as they serve.
